Ultra-long cable release
What you'll need:
-- Standard Nikon cable release with two pin female ends or the Canon cable release.
-- Thin speaker wire, length of your choice. Make sure that the wire you splice in, is the same gauge, or close to it.
-- (I've tested this up to 1200 feet and it works so far so good.)
This is so simple to do, you don't need photos.
1: Cut the release cable in half and cut off the sheath of the two internal wires, on both loose ends.
Try to leave about 3/4 inch of the copper wire exposed for ease.
2: Splice the speaker wire in between the two ends. Seal and you're finished.
Variations:
Variation 1:
ADDENDUM: Variation 1 was on the previous version of this page and should not be followed.
Instead of speaker wire, use regular household lamp cord with the household male and female ends. This way, you can simply insert extension cords again and again to make the cable as long as you desire. However the initial charge coming from the camera is only 5 volts. Resistance through
an extensively long cable might not allow the circuit to be completed. Here was the problem, a lamp cord is a larger gauge wire and will soak up the voltage and apply too much resistance. If anything, you want to run a similar sized gauge, +/- 1 or 2 sizes. The resistance issue would only effect you if you were using the lamp cord.
WARNING!!!
If you use the lamp cord, be very careful to label the wire so you don't plug it into a socket. Serious injury or death may occur. That was another problem.
Variation 2: Use a regular RCA plug ends (the type your home electronics use on the back) on the end of each piece. Make sure of course that you put a male on one end and female on the other. Then, you can just plug in RCA cables to get your desired length.
Variation 3: Good ole miniphone plugs, doing the same thing I just mentioned in variation 2.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
